1. Welcome and Introduction
15 to 20 minutes
Group therapy consists of counseling sessions held in a group and led by one or two licensed therapists. This kind of treatment is especially effective in treating young people who struggle with substance abuse and mental health conditions.
It is human nature to gravitate towards groups. This strategy reduces the feelings of isolation, depression, and shame that are associated with substance abuse and mental health conditions.
Due to the supportive, encouraging, and social nature of group therapy sessions, it is a common and effective treatment method for this age group.
Group sessions will generally take place a couple of times a week for the duration of treatment, which is dependent upon the level of care being provided.
Each counseling session typically lasts one and a half to two hours, with the typical group therapy session following an outline such as:
15 to 20 minutes
20 to 30 minutes
45 minutes
15 to 20 minutes
Sandstone Care provides age specific care for those who struggle with substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. We have treatment centers throughout the United States.
At Sandstone Care, we do not believe in a one-size fits all approach. Each individual and the challenges they face are unique and must be treated as such.
Some struggles may require the use of different treatments, which is why the type of group therapy your counselor uses will change depending on what the session is intended to treat.
Our goal is to treat the person as a whole, help them develop healthy coping mechanisms and achieve their goals, and provide the tools needed for long-lasting recovery.
Anger management, relapse prevention, and trauma treatment all require different models.
The personal growth that comes from hearing about others’ situations and supporting one another is invaluable in learning how to approach one’s own life in a productive way.
Group therapy offers support to young adults across the addiction spectrum. The facilitator will select the proper model based on the group’s needs and demographics (age, gender, concern, etc.). Group therapy not only helps young adults address their challenges but also helps to build strong social skills.
Group members are able to see examples of others’ recovery, open up about their experiences, and receive support, all of which go a long way in reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors.
In addition to conventional clinical settings, age-specific group therapy can take on a number of forms including art sessions, time in the outdoors, and recreational activities.
This type of therapy is especially effective in treating addiction because it plays to our intrinsically social nature. An advantage of group therapy is that in these group sessions, young adults are able to build healthy relationships with peers.
Regardless of the format, the models used remain consistent:
Our virtual IOP program offers the same programming that we offer in person, all online – this is ideal for those who live too far to drive to an addiction center, have transportation issues, or have health concerns that make in-person treatment challenging.

Our Transitional Living Program combines the structure of treatment and group living, with the freedom of living away from home.
This level of care is for young adults (18-30) who are not quite ready to heal from home. This level of care provides a safe and supportive living environment integrated with a PHP or IOP level of care. Here, you’ll learn life skills and healthy recovery strategies in an environment that’s set up for your success.
4 weeks of on-site day treatment.
Our Young Adult Day Treatment Program, also known as Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), is a highly structured level of care for young adults that offers five days of robust programming a week.
Our two distinct mental health and substance use tracks help young adults to stabilize, begin to understand their mental health and/or addiction struggles, and heal from them. We strive to help our clients become more like the person they want to be without using negative coping strategies or substances to get there.
12 weeks of on-site or virtual treatment.
Our Young Adult IOP, or Intensive Outpatient Program, offers two distinct tracks to address young adult needs, each track consisting of 3-4 days of weekly programming.
In our mood disorder track, we are able to focus on mental health, depression, trauma, and anxiety. In our dual diagnosis track, we are able to support young adults with substance use and mental health challenges. Each focuses on developing positive social, academic, and vocational habits while continuing with their job or school responsibilities.
