Addiction can cause devastating changes to your child. Beyond the physical risks, you may have also noticed that they seem to be isolated, depressed, and unable to enjoy the things they used to be passionate about.
When a teen is managing an addiction, parents may consider several options to help their child. Parents may consider sending their teens to a therapist or counselor for an hour every week, but for teens who are engaging in destructive behaviors such as substance use or living with severe mental health conditions, more thorough treatment may be necessary. There are boot camps and wilderness programs for out of control teens, however many parents don’t want to send their teen away for months, especially when family connection is crucial for teens to recover long-term.
So if a teen needs more help than a therapy session once a week while keeping the family connected and teens close to home, what options are available and how can parents know the appropriate level of care for their teen?
In terms of addiction treatment levels, there are typically two main categories: inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient treatment involves round-the-clock care in a hospital or residential facility and is usually recommended for teens who are at risk of harming themselves or others, or who require intensive monitoring and stabilization. Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, allows the teen to live at home while attending therapy sessions or programs during the day, 3-4 times a week. Additionally, within outpatient care, there are different levels of intensity.
Teen IOP is most helpful for teens who have completed a higher level of care (such as residential treatment) and need to step down, and for teens who participate in substance use or have mental health concerns but want to avoid interrupting school and work. This level of care is suitable for teens who need more support than standard therapy but do not require round-the-clock care. For teens who need 24/7 monitoring, residential treatment may be needed.
Teen IOP provides:
This program is ideal for those in need of outpatient treatment who live too far to drive in, have transportation issues, or have health concerns that make in-person treatment challenging.
Virtual IOP consists of:
Teen Day Treatment is a suitable option for teens who need more stability and structure than regular outpatient care, but do not need the 24/7 monitoring provided in residential treatment. This level of care is appropriate for teens who’s substance use is preventing them from functioning. Teens who need daily addiction care but do not need round-the-clock treatment, then the highly structured treatment provided in our partial hospitalization program may be beneficial.
Teen Day Treatment includes:
Residential treatment is an appropriate treatment option for teens with substance use or a co-occuring disorder who need round-the-clock care and monitoring. We offer two residential treatment centers designed specifically for teens living with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, and co-occurring mental health disorders. This level of care can benefit teens who are living with substance use or underlying mental health conditions and need 24/7 treatment.
Residential treatment consists of:
Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and reaching out for help is a positive step towards ensuring your teen gets the care they need. The choice between IOP, PHP, traditional therapy, or residential treatment, depends on the severity of the teen’s substance use and their ability to cope outside of a treatment setting without substances. Consulting with mental health professionals can help parents determine the most appropriate level of care for their teen.
Family plays a crucial role in providing teens the support and encouragement they need at home to recover from addiction. Some positive actions parents and family members can take to support their teens include:

The amount of treatment needed varies greatly and depends on your child’s individual needs. At Sandstone Care, we believe in treating our clients as a whole person instead of just treating their substance use disorder or mental health disorders in isolation. Our program is individualized to meet those specific needs and as such length of stay may vary. Navigate to one of our specific teen treatment programs to see the standard timeline for each.
Teen Residential or inpatient treatment can be necessary in certain instances. We recommend completing a comprehensive clinical assessment with a licensed professional to help determine the appropriate level of care required.
An assessment at Sandstone Care is simply a conversation. It includes one of our licensed therapists, the individual who is considering the program, and any of their family members that they feel supported by. The purpose of the assessment is to better understand your teen’s unique needs and situation. It also determines how appropriate our program is for them and which level of care is medically and clinically necessary. The assessment process typically happens in person at one of our offices and lasts around an hour and a half to two hours.
