Sair Lazzaro stands out in the field of mental health with a unique blend of neuroscience, psychology, and art therapy. They are currently the Reston program’s lead therapist. Sair navigated their academic journey through the University of Pittsburgh, where they majored in Neuroscience & Psychology, and later, George Washington University, earning a MA in Art Therapy. Sair is on an exciting path toward becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Board-Certified Registered Art Therapist, already equipped with LPC-R and ATR-P certifications.
In their therapeutic practice, Sair uses a blend of Visual Arts Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), all through a person-centered lens. They have a keen eye for the existential questions that often preoccupy teens, choosing to augment traditional talk therapy with the dynamic, expressive power of the arts. This innovative approach aims to unlock cognitive flexibility and meet teens where they are.
Sair’s expertise shines in working with adolescents navigating substance use recovery, neurodiversity, and issues relevant to the LGBTQ+ community. Their versatile experience includes everything from harm reduction to assisting clients with community reintegration post-institution, and leading intensive outpatient treatments.
Before embarking on their therapeutic career, Sair was immersed in the world of cognitive neuroscience for eight years, exploring the intricacies of human cognition and psychopathology through cutting-edge neuroimaging technology. This scientific rigor now underpins their art therapy practice, allowing them to offer a deeply informed and innovative approach to mental health care.
What truly energizes Sair is the opportunity to connect with teens at the start of their treatment journey, many of whom are initially hesitant about therapy. They excel in walking alongside these young individuals, helping them to articulate and chase after their own visions for a fulfilling life.
Outside the therapy room, Sair is a talented artist, delving into a slew of unusual artistic endeavors. From bookmaking and sculpture to experimenting with textiles, natural materials, and even the art of creating with bugs, Sair’s creative spirit knows no bounds. 2024 alone has seen them explore leatherworking and fashion design, amongst other projects.
When not working with art or therapy, Sair cherishes moments with their partner, lifelong friends, and Lizard, their exceptionally fluffy cat. Whether through professional achievements or personal passions, Sair Lazzaro spends each day proving the power of combining creativity with care.
