Edwin Hernandez-Martinez is a dedicated Residential Therapist at Sandstone Care in Crownsville, Maryland. With a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Edwin has honed his skills in a variety of settings, including the Veteran’s Health Administration and an inpatient eating disorder program. His extensive experience also spans working in an outpatient community clinic in downtown Baltimore, where he provided support to local residents suffering from acute mental illnesses.
As a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), Edwin employs a relational psychodynamic approach, grounded in Polyvagal Theory. His methods are further enriched by a fellowship at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (ICP+P), allowing him to integrate advanced techniques such as Parts Work (based on Internal Family Systems), mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Embodied Recovery for addressing disordered eating.
Edwin is particularly adept at working with adolescents and adults, specializing in treating anxiety, depression, relationship issues, grief and loss, disordered eating, and addiction. His therapeutic work is deeply influenced by a desire to explore and understand the patterns stemming from family of origin issues and how they impact his clients’ current relationships with themselves and others.
One key belief Edwin shares with his clients is that recovery is not a linear process. He emphasizes the importance of understanding each person within their environment, providing a supportive space to address and grieve unmet childhood needs, and fostering the development of trusting, safe relationships with partners, friends, and families.
What Edwin finds most rewarding about his role as a mental health provider is the privilege of witnessing his clients’ personal stories and their progress toward healing. This deep connection to his work reflects his compassionate approach and commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those he works with.
Outside of his professional life, Edwin’s greatest joy comes from being a father. He treasures spending quality time with his family and friends. Edwin’s passion for his family enriches his understanding and empathy, qualities that he brings into his therapeutic practice. This empathy makes him a trusted and effective therapist that Sandstone is grateful to have the opportunity to work with.
