Mental Health Treatment For Teens & Young Adults

For teens and young adults, navigating mental health challenges can be especially tough. At our Virginia Beach Mental Health Center, we use evidence-based treatments to help young people overcome anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health issues.

Our outpatient center provides both Partial Hospitalization Programming (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP). PHP is a structured treatment plan of 25 hours a week for 4 weeks. For those needing a more flexible approach, our IOP sessions are roughly 16 hours a week over twelve weeks.

Our comprehensive approach also includes family therapy and thorough discharge planning to ensure your continued success after the program.

From Chaos To Community

“As someone who has spent all of my life – up until the complete breakdown – ignoring my mental health, there’s no time like the present to start working on yourself.”

When Nick came to Sandstone, he’d been in and out of IOP and PHP treatment programs in another state. Coming to one of Sandstone’s mental health centers was his final “Hail Mary,” and he hoped it would help him heal his mental health for good.

What he got was just that, and so much more. Listen to Nick’s inspiring story of how the program helped him understand his diagnosis, develop compassion for himself, and build a community of friends and mentors who genuinely cared.

Our care team is an integrated team of professionals consisting of licensed clinicians, mental health therapists, medical providers, and highly-qualified teachers. Each mental health professional collaborates with one another to create your personal treatment map to recovery.

Medication management & medication assisted treatment can be important parts of the treatment process for mental illness. If after a psychiatric evaluation medication is recommended, our medication provider will see you on a regular basis until an ongoing provider is established.

If you have an outside primary care/medication provider and would like to continue using them during Sandstone outpatient mental health counseling, a release will be required to ensure integrated care.

No. Our center for behavioral health Virginia Beach (located in the Hampton Roads area) operates strictly by appointment. However, providing support to individuals seeking treatment for themselves or their loved ones is our top priority.

Our dedicated phone line is available around the clock to address any inquiries you may have about our mental health services. Our team of professionals is always ready to offer mental health evaluations, compassionate guidance, and assistance to ensure your needs are met.

Yes. Substance use is often a symptom of a deeper mental health struggle or challenge, which is why our mental health care programs address both problems simultaneously. By getting to the root cause of the issue, we can help our clients reach longer-lasting and more sustainable recovery results.

If substance abuse (more appropriately known as “substance use disorder”) continues to be the primary issue being addressed after stabilization, then our detox level of care might be a more appropriate fit.

Research consistently demonstrates that age-specific mental health programs, like the one offered at Sandstone Care, are more effective and lead to longer-lasting positive outcomes. The key factor is tailoring the treatment to what matters most to you.

When mental health care is customized to your specific age group, it becomes more relevant and resonant with your life experiences, challenges, and developmental needs. This personalized approach addresses issues in a way that directly connects with your reality, making the interventions more impactful.

Studies indicate that this alignment with personal context increases engagement and commitment to the treatment process. When the care is based on what matters to you, it is more likely to be effective in producing positive, lasting changes in recovery for your mental health and well-being. Our mental health facilities in Virginia Beach provide an individualized focus that ensures treatment is aligned with your unique circumstances, leading to more meaningful and enduring results.

Our VA intensive outpatient program (IOP) for teens and young adults runs roughly 16 hours a week over twelve weeks. We offer two distinct tracks to address our client’s needs.

Our mood disorder track focuses on mental health, depression, trauma, and anxiety. Our dual diagnosis track supports clients with substance use and mental health challenges. Each focuses on developing positive habits and coping strategies while continuing with their job or school responsibilities.

Loved ones play a vital role in the overall wellness of a person. That’s why we offer individual family therapy sessions bi-weekly to examine the role the family members play in each other’s lives, and how they can better support one another.

We want to provide the effective family therapy that Virginia Beach residents deserve, so we focus on promoting connection and healing in your family dynamics. Our program utilizes weekly multi-family groups to reinforce new skills being learned in group counseling. Multifamily therapy is a source of support, self-esteem, and guidance for the families of both young adults and adolescents.

We provide behavioral health services and thorough case management to ensure that each family receives the best care for their situation.
