Drug & Alcohol Rehab for Teens & Young Adults in Maryland

Rolling hills, beautiful beaches, and sprawling fields are just a few things you’ll find in “The Free State”, otherwise known as Maryland. From the Appalachian Trail to the Chesapeake Bay, the state of Maryland features many naturally beautiful places, but despite all of the beauty that this state holds, Maryland also deals with one of the worst drug problems in the United States.

Many individuals in Maryland face drug and alcohol addiction, with opioids being a frontrunner. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Maryland is among the top five states with the highest rates of opioid-related deaths, with their death rate being above the national average since 1999.

Statistics such as these can be difficult to read, but despite the disheartening information above, Maryland offers many therapeutic and community resources for those struggling with substance abuse, as well as their families.

What to look for when choosing a drug and alcohol rehab in Maryland

Making the decision to seek out substance abuse services is a big step – but choosing a treatment center can be an overwhelming and difficult process. At Sandstone Care, we believe that treatment must be individualized in order to best meet the needs of our clients and set them up for success.

Some things to look for when seeking out a treatment center include:

  • Licensing & Accreditation
In the state of Maryland, treatment programs are licensed by the Behavioral Health Administration of Maryland, and accredited by the Joint Commission. The Joint Commission is an independent organization that bases accreditation on the ability to demonstrate quality, results, and value. The Behavioral Health Administration is a state-run organization that provides licensing to agencies that office treatment for substance use disorders. Organizations that have a license from OBH must undergo regular inspections and follow the rules and guidelines laid out in the Code of Maryland Regulations. Sandstone Care is a licensed and accredited substance use care provider.
  • Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders
Many people who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction also have a co-occurring mental health disorder like depression or anxiety. For clients who have a co-occurring disorder, or dual diagnoses, it is important that the treatment provided addresses the person as a whole. This includes mental health concerns, not just active addiction. Sandstone Care strives to understand the impact that pre-existing mental health disorders have on addiction. We work individually with the client in order to provide them with the best care possible and set them up for success.
  • Qualified & Credentialed Treatment Team
There are nationally recognized standards for professionals who provide care for people with substance use disorders. It’s important that the treatment program you choose has a multidisciplinary team that has the proper credentials, so that quality care can be provided. Some of the people who should be on the team of providers are:

    • Therapist
    • Psychiatrist
    • Medical Doctor
    • Nursing Staff
    • Addiction Counselor
    • Psychologist
  • Use of Evidence-Based Practices
Evidence-Based Practices are therapeutic modalities that have been proven to work through scientific research. Some of these practices are utilized by Sandstone Care, and include:

  • Medical Detox
Medical detox can be provided in a hospital setting before entering a treatment program, but it is preferable to seek services in a facility that specializes in detox. Sandstone Care’s Colorado Springs Detox Center and Virginia Detox Center are staffed by registered nurses, behavioral health technicians, certified addiction counselors, a therapist, and a psychiatrist. By completing detox in a facility that has trained mental health staff on-site, our clients have 24/7 support and are able to start the rehabilitation process while finishing their detox.
  • Length of Program
Every treatment center differs with the length of their programs, but it’s good to have an estimate of how long a program is before making a commitment. At Sandstone Care, we treat our clients individually, assessing their needs day by day. Because of this, we cannot give a definitive answer about how long someone will be in our program. We can, however, conduct an in-person assessment and estimate how long would be best for you to stay, and what level of care would be the most beneficial for you.
