Whether in class, hanging out with friends or playing sports, social interaction is crucial for proper development.

What is group therapy?

Group therapy counseling sessions

Counseling sessions are held in a group and led by one or two therapists – is especially effective in treating young people with substance abuse and mental health concerns.

It gives teens and young adults an engaging and fluid environment in which to share and process their challenges. Because of its supportive, encouraging and social nature, it is a common treatment method for this age group.

  • Review of the Week- 20 to 30 minutes
  • General Discussion- 45 minutes
  • Recap and Next Steps- 15 to 20 minutes

Who benefits from group therapy?

Group therapy can help teens and young adults across the addiction spectrum.

The facilitator will select the proper model based on the group’s needs and demographics (age, gender, concern, etc).

Group therapy not only helps teens and young adults address their situations, but also builds strong social skills. The relationships and abilities that come from hearing about others’ situations and supporting one another is invaluable in learning how to approach life in a productive way.

Group therapy for substance abuse and addiction

This type of therapy is especially effective in treating addiction because it plays to our intrinsically social nature. As humans, we tend to gravitate towards groups.

This reduces the isolation, depression and shame that result from substance abuse, while seeing examples of others’ recovery, opening up about your experiences and receiving support go a long way in reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors.

At Sandstone Care, we understand how hard it can sometimes be to love yourself, and how important it is to feel accepted.

Our entire community of counselors and clients will welcome you with open arms, free of judgment, so you can safely process what you’re going through with the help of people who truly care.

Alcohol

The transition between recreational alcohol use and alcohol dependence can be a subtle one. But if you’re finding that you can’t stop drinking when you want to, you may have alcohol dependence.

Marijuana

Similar to alcohol use, smoking or ingesting marijuana has become normalized as a way to relax or take the edge off. When overused, it can make you feel unable to cope with life without using.

Stimulants

A stimulant is any drug that increases your central nervous system activity. Stimulants are used to heighten attention, hyperactivity, and alertness. Abuse of these drugs can lead to a variety of health problems.

Opioids

Opioids are a class of drugs that include synthetic opioids, pain killers, and the illegal drug heroin. These drugs, including prescription medications, are highly addictive.
